Indefensible – How lawyers failed to stop the Post Office scandal

John Hyde, Deputy Editor of the Law Society Gazette talks about the one of the UK’s biggest miscarriages of justice in recent years, on the publication of his book about the case. In-person event hosted by the UEA Law School in the Enterprise Centre.

The Post Office scandal is an indelible stain on the British justice system: hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly labelled criminals, ruining lives and destroying communities. But the real scandal was that the Post Office’s lawyers knew the evidence was flawed but failed to act in their quest to defend a corporation. Why did they not stop it?

John Hyde is one of the foremost legal journalists in the UK, with more than 15 years’ experience in reporting on the industry. He was a leading commentator on the Post Office scandal and is a regular speaker on radio, podcasts and at conferences.
His new book dives into how legal professionals failed in their duties, silenced the truth and even turned against the victims, including accounts from victims who were advised to enter guilty pleas. But this is not just about the Post Office — this is a wider examination of the legal profession and its ethical boundaries, asking whether lawyers are putting clients’ interests above justice and how to stop such a disaster from happening again.

Thursday 19 November 2026 – 3.30pm to 7.00pm – St Giles House Hotel
Probate and Prison – Contempt of Court in Estate Admininstration Claims

On Thursday, 19th November, the Norfolk and Norwich Law Society will be partnering with George Woodhead and Chris de Beneducci from Selborne Chambers to discuss Probate and Prison – Contempt of Court in Estate Administration Claims.

What to do when a personal representative withholds estate funds or fails to provide key administration documents? This is the stuff of clients’ nightmares. Committal applications are one of the most powerful tools for bringing the administration of an estate back under control, but also one of the least well understood.

In recent High Court cases, George Woodhead (2009 call) and Chris de Beneducci (2015 call) have both obtained prison sentences against defaulting executors. George and Chris will draw on their experiences in these cases to explore contempt of court in the contentious estates field: when is a committal application appropriate; what are the evidential thresholds; and how can any procedural traps be avoided?

Programme

15:30 – 16:00 – Tea and Coffee on Arrival
16:00 – 17:00 – George Woodhead and Chris de Beneducci on Probate and Prison..
7:00 – 19:00 – Networking Drinks and Nibbles

As last year, this looks like another enthralling session from Selborne Chambers….

Norfolk Lawyers do Countdown
Another cracking evening at the Forum. Its official, lawyers of Leathes Prior Solicitors are the runaway winners of Norfolk Lawyers Do Countdown 2026, despite an epic attempt to overhaul them from ‘2025 Teapot Holders’ NORFOLK COMMUNITY LAW SERVICE LTD. In a fun evening sponsored by Smith & Pinching, they proved their own team name, ‘Consonantly Getting Things Wrong’ incorrect, by taking the lead in round 3 and hanging on to it to the end, despite NORFOLK COMMUNITY LAW SERVICE LTD securing the ‘Countdown Conundrum’ in one last gasp attempt to catch up.

So, the gauntlet is thrown down to any firm who can take the ‘teapot’ from Leathes Prior Solicitors next year. Roll on 2027! Thanks must go Mark Fitch, ‘Miss Jennings’, Steve N Allen and Society President Milan Pandit for keeping order, the score, making some pretty tough adjudications and entertaining the teams.

Pictured, left to right, Billy Coughlin, Dylan O. Matthew Swash, Milan Pandit and Jonathan Pace of NCLS, handing over the ‘teapot’.

Tuesday 10 March
